personal journal : i welcome back my anger

Lately I’ve been getting pretty angry at night, usually about things outside of my control.

I remember how much I allowed people to get away with – all for the sake of being the bigger person, of being in the right, not stooping to their level, not causing conflict. It was hammered into me to learn to forgive people when they wronged me. By Christian pastors and ministers in Sunday school, to my parents, relatives. I was actively being bullied as a teen and told that it was because they had bad home lives, and that I should feel sympathy for them – that I should forgive them. My feelings were invalidated almost all of the time – never considered. I’ve been wondering more and more about it lately, and I feel like all the self help books, the being the bigger person – the “just get over it” speeches are all bullshit.

Hunt for Community in The U.S. — Chrissy Fest

This group felt a lot like that. Maybe there’s some drama or side stories I missed, since I’m still an outsider looking in. But it felt like a community that worked—naturally, fluidly. I mean, this whole event was called Chrissy Fest. A lot of people came just to see her. Folks drove from all over the state to show up, say hi, and celebrate her birthday. You think to yourself, Wow, she must be a one-of-a-kind person to receive that kind of love.

Hunt for Community in the U.S. — Miss Vee’s Freak Show

Miss Vee's Freak Show ended up garnering many different types of people, from many different walks of life. They were there for their own reasons, some because they liked theatre and a good show, others to support a friend, and even more to meet, talk and hang with their friends. But the one thing I noticed about it all was the amount of time, community, and care that was so invested in the event. How everyone seemed to know each other, welcome those that they didn’t know.
